The hygienist has a crucial role to play in the maintenance of your healthy teeth and gums. Gum disease (gingivitis) is very common and normally presents with symptoms such as inflamed gums, bleeding, receding gums, bad breath, sensitivity and sometimes pain when brushing. At Hampstead Dental Studio, the focus is very much on prevention, and so if you present with any of these symptoms, with regular visits to the hygienist to maintain healthy gums we can stop gum disease from progressing and quite often reverse the condition.
If gum disease does progress and it is at an advanced stage (periodontitis), it will start to irreversibly damage the supporting tissues around the teeth (bone and gums) and can cause pain, infections, wobbly teeth and eventually tooth loss. If you are affected by advanced gum disease we may recommend more thorough and regular visits to the hygienist, and in some cases also advise advanced gum treatments with the dentist.
The majority of our patients will see the hygienist twice a year, or we might develop a bespoke treatment plan for you depending on your unique oral health needs. The more serious the condition, the more regularly you may need to see the hygienist. The foundations of healthy teeth are healthy gums and so we will also often recommend a visit to the hygienist before most dental treatments.
Your appointment with the hygienist will usually last between 30 to 45 minutes.
Dental hygiene has a place at home too, of course, and all our dental professionals will spend time with you at each appointment to ensure that you are equipped and have the knowledge to carry out optimum levels of dental hygiene at home.
