Fillings are a simple treatment designed to restore teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay.

Appointments

What is a filling?

Fillings fill in a gap or hole in a tooth – often known as a cavity or caries – left behind as a result of tooth decay or cracks in the teeth. They’re an important part of our general dentistry treatment range as, if left unattended, cavities can get larger over time, leading to further issues and more complex treatment.

How do I know if I need a filling?

Provided you are coming to visit us here at the practice for regular check-ups, one of our dental professionals will hopefully know you need a filling before you do. However, if left unattended, they can cause emergencies like increased sensitivity, pain when biting and chewing and toothache.

What is the treatment like?

Getting a filling is a relatively straightforward procedure. If required, we will numb the area being treated, so that you don’t experience any pain or discomfort, before removing any weak or decayed parts of the tooth. After we’ve done this, we’ll thoroughly clean and shape the tooth before applying the filling.

What are fillings made of?

Traditionally, fillings have been made of a metal amalgam material which is silver in appearance.

Now, however, most patients want something less noticeable and often choose a tooth-coloured composite filling. These filings are much more natural looking and are made of a composite resin, which is strong and durable. At Hampstead Dental Studio, this is our filling of choice.
